Palm has certainly come under a lot of criticism lately for its lack of innovation in the smartphone department, and rightfully so. While the HTCs and Nokias of the world continually churn out new and exciting devices, Palm can only offer up its aging lineup of Treo smartphones. The company tried to mix things up with the Palm Foleo, but we know that failed miserably. Fortunately, we think Palm will have better luck with its latest device, the Palm Centro. Okay, now we know what you're thinking. Sure, we (lovingly) raked Palm over the coals in our open letter to the company, and yeah, we haven't been the sweetest of hearts to the crew from Sunnyvale (with good reason, of course). However, If you've paid attention to our past good-intentioned prodding, then you'll know that getting our hands on a new Palm device still gives some of us geeky chills.

After seeing scores of "leaked" photos of the Centro, and hearing enough internet chatter about the device to make your brain vibrate like a tightly-wound piano string, actually getting our hands on the phone was honestly a bit of a surprise, both bad and good. I have always liked the concept of skin cases, but for me their rubber makes it difficult to quickly slide the Treo in and out of a pocket because it grips to the inside of the pocket. Only recently have we seen a decent skin case holster, but I'm a pocket guy, so my Treo usually goes naked.

MobiVoIP: VoIP For Your Palm

The Palm OS platform is now being used by the MantraGroup for mobiVoip.

Calling Palm OS a "terrific" product for basic PIM and document use, MantraGroup says Palm, a separate, independent company that makes hardware, "has done a yeoman's job of extending it to a new line of devices with more multimedia and storage capabilities."

MobiVoIP is an effort to give the Palm OS VoIP functionality. "When Skype came to Pocket PC, allowing wifi-enabled PPCs to make phone calls for free over the internet, users across the globe were hoping for a PalmOS version," MantraGroup officials say, in announcing the proprietary technology of MantraGroup's mobiVoIP.

Hands On with Palm's Treo 700p

First came the 700w. Today, we got our hands on the Palm Treo 700p, the latest iteration of Palm's smartphone running the Palm OS. This 700p is being offered by Sprint, which is slated to start shipping it later this month; Verizon, which is already selling the Windows Mobile-based 700w, will also be offering a 700p this month.

As I found from my first few hours of hands-on with the unit, the revamped Palm-based Treo 700p has many fine attributes. Palm has made numerous refinements to its Treo 650 design. For Palm users, the biggest change on the Treo 700p is a most welcome one: More on-board memory (like the 700w, the 700p has 128MB total memory, 60MB available to users, as compared with 32MB total, 23MB available to users on the Treo 650), which in turn led to greater speed and response time in my experience. In handling, I found the Treo 700p was dramatically faster than my Treo 650, at everything from loading and viewing media to scrolling through files on a 1GB SD card, and switching among applications. Even scrolling around within applications--including Documents to Go 8, preloaded on the unit, and the Blazer Web browser--was noticeably faster than on a Treo 650.

Broadlane took a phased approach to implementing a new solution. The company first switched from BlackBerry to GoodLink in November 2003. This gave employees mobile access to their Microsoft Outlook email, contacts and calendaring information making them more productive when they were out of the office.

As integrated devices became more reliable and compact, Broadlane evaluated smartphones from several manufacturers and selected the Palm Treo 600 because of the device's compact size and intuitive design, further increasing employee productivity. Broadlane initially deployed 200 Treo 600 smartphones in July 2003. Since then, the company has updated to the Palm Treo 650 smartphone and has deployed more than 250 devices.

CNET has reviewed the Palm Treo 700p (Sprint)

You can stop squinting at all the blurry camera phone pictures and cease swapping stories about what a carrier rep told you in confidence, for the Palm Treo 700p is finally here. And though the new Palm OS-based smart phone was announced for both Sprint and Verizon Wireless, Sprint is first out of the gate to offer the device, with availability expected at the end of May. So is it worth picking up? We think so. The changes aren't revolutionary, but as the successor to the Treo 650, the 700p brings some welcome improvements, such as EV-DO support and increased memory. Of course, it isn't perfect. There's still no integrated Wi-Fi, and Palm OS 6 has yet to see the light of day, but with solid performance and enhanced connectivity and multimedia capabilities, the Treo 700p is a winner. Sprint's pricing is set at $399.99 with a two-year contract or $549.99 with a one-year contract. We should also note that as of this writing, Sprint says it has no plans to offer a cameraless version of the 700p.

Medtronic Deploys Thousands of Palm Treo Smartphones With Medtronic Customized Applications

Fortune 500 company Medtronic (Nasdaq:MDT), a global leader in medical technology, standardized its mobile sales force on Palm(R) Treo(TM) smartphones. Employees are using more than 2,000 Treo smartphones as a wireless reference, communication and selling tool to increase sales force productivity and to improve inventory management. Take a look at your Treo's digital camera. No snickering. Whether 650 or 700w, the SmartPhone's dumb camera isn't much. Okay, especially in the 650 it's awful. That same focus-free, flash-deprived implementation in the 700w boasts higher resolution, but it doesn't help much.

Alas, I know of no whiz-bang ten-dollar attachment you can snap onto the lens and go on safari shooting pictures for National Geographic. Yet I proclaim that it is possible to get useful images out of Treos. That is, with conscientious care in taking the shots and a visit to the magic shop for some digital image whittling after the click. This means you, operating your computer's mouse in an editing program, a.k.a. an image processor, pointing at problems and fixing them, one horrid blue blob at a time.

Opera Mini gains worldwide momentum: Four new distribution contracts signed

Opera Software today announced four new contracts with companies that will promote and distribute the Opera Mini mobile browser to their customers. The four companies are US-based PriceRunner, HT Telecom in Latvia, Small Planet (part of jippii.ru) in Russia and the Baltics, and Denmark-based Unwire, which will distribute Opera Mini in 180 countries. This announcement comes only days after Opera announced three important distribution agreements for Opera Mini with T-Mobile, GrameenPhone in Bangladesh and the German telecommunications service provider, debitel.

According to the agreements, the four companies will actively promote and distribute both regular and customized versions of Opera Mini to their customers. The customization may include company branding, bookmarks and content on the Opera Mini start page.

I couldn't resist working up a diagram that deduces what the Linux OS that Palm seems to be working on might look like, presuming it's being designed as an update of the Palm OS for the Treo line.

My conception in a nutshell: a system that is backward compatible with Palm OS Garnet via a Palm OS emulator, but with improved multi-tasking and 3G network support via a handful of built-in native Linux applications. Pretty modest compared to ALP. This is something that Palm could plausibly have developed for release in Hollywood and/or Lowrider assuming (a) they started working with Linux at least a year and a half ago on an R&D basis, as CNET reported back in Nov 2004, and (b) they decided to move into product-development mode around the time they lost the bid to acquire PalmSource last summer.

I'd like to propose a simple scenario to you. What if your computing devices consisted of a laptop and a Treo-style Smartphone? You use the laptop to do all the normal computing tasks, as well as some extras such as play games or some sort of development work here and there. You have your Treo as a main data organizer and means of email management when out and about. You do the occasional budgeting and gaming, but for the most part it is an assisting computing device. Now, what if the laptop were no longer usable due to mechanical failure? Could a Treo, or any PDA phone for that matter, pick up the slack? Or, would you really find out that a PDA is just that, an assistant not really capable of starting for your championship team. Opera Mini Travels East: Largest operator in Bangladesh chooses Opera Mini

Opera Software today announced that GrameenPhone, the largest mobile phone operator in Bangladesh, has chosen Opera Mini to bring the full Internet to its mobile phone subscribers. GrameenPhone has a 62% market share in Bangladesh and will be offering a customized and localized version of Opera Mini as a free download to its 5.5 million subscribers. Our Group Member Wilf's Observations on Palm TX

As mentioned in my last post I've upgraded to a TX. I formely used a Tungsten T3. Here are a few observations on the TX.

I'm really impressed. It's a well designed machine with lots of memory and extra storage on an SD card (I'm presently using 2G). The design is attractive and I like the darker colour. It's relatively slim enough to reside in a shirt pocket. Going out on a limb, I think this may be a benchmark PDA like the Palm V or the M515.

Initially, I tried to put all my programs from my T3 into the TX which, to my dismay, didn't work. So I had to load them selectively. It's running OK now, after a few bouts of angst, and I find the TX to be consistantly stable.

Two items that my T3 had which the TX doesn't are voice recording and a vibrating alarm. I never used the former, so I don't miss it. I would appreciate having, however, the vibrating alarm.

I've found the Wi-Fi very good. It does take several seconds to connect (say 10 or 20) and, let's face it, browsing on a small screen requires patience and adaptation!

A branded and customized Opera Mini version with T-Mobile's look and feel will be pre-installed on four mobile phones, with several more handsets under development. Our Group Member Leslie Anne's Palm TX Story

Here is my Palm TX story so far...

Apart from monetary concerns (in English, being broke!) my big concern was to get a new PDA which would be a significant enhancement over my Sony Clie SJ-22, which I've been very happy with for 2 1/2 years. My main problem with the Clie was it's slowness and the fact that Sony had decided to get out of the PDA market, except in Japan. I had packed the Memory Stick with software, and running it from there meant ZLauncher had to copy it to main memory - S.L.O.W.! I considered only Palm-compatible products because everything I had read seemed to say they were still superior in performance, software available and price to the Pocket PC. Also, I had a lot of software I wanted to use on the new device.

The second contender was the Palm Lifedrive. I ruled it out on the basis of price, the slower and more failure prone mini hard drive (TX uses SD cards) and size (just a bit thicker and heavier). I can get 2 GB SD cards, so there is no memory advantage to the Lifedrive's 4 GB hard drive. Sure it might cost a bit more to get up to 4 GB on the TX, but being able to have an unlimited number is a big plus for storing MP3's and movies. Yes, both will play full length movies as well as MP3 music!

My conclusion was that, while not totally problem free (what computer is?) the Palm TX would suit me. I found the best price were at www.cendirect.ca and www.softmagic.ca , both in Montreal but with warehouses in several locations. The prices were almost identical. I bought from the latter and it was shipped from Montreal and arrived in two days, not counting the weekend, as I ordered late on a Friday. It came by Canada Post, right to the door.

All was in order in the box, and after the obligatory 3 hour initial charge it worked perfectly! I have a wireless router and it connected fast, more consistently and stayed connected far better than my laptop with a Trendnet USB wireless adapter. I found I could connect well from at least 150 feet away outside, through several walls, while the laptop has trouble staying connected inside the house!

Of course I'm a software packrat and after throwing almost everything I could possibly use at my TX the memory is still less than half full. That includes dozens of e-books, plus games and utilities. There are 62 items on my ZLauncher "All" page, but of course probably a dozen or more are built-in or supplied with the TX. Yes, there were a couple of lockups and several spontaneous soft resets. I did have to do a hard reset twice also but restoring from backup by Hotsyncing worked fine - although a couple of items installed after the last hotsync had to be added again. I didn't expect anything else, since my desktop computer also has "issues" and I'd been reading several Palm user's groups.

My overall impression is that Palm has a world beater in this device. Good display (480x320), good WiFi and Bluetooth (although I haven't been able to use it and as stable as any computer has a right to be. I recommend it.

VolumeCare 5 Pro Has Now Reached Version 5.30

GoTreo Software's VolumeCare has been updated at PalmGear.

VolumeCare increases the maximum volume levels for each Treo speaker. Studies have proven volume increases up to a 250% in handset volume, speaker phone volume and wired headset volume. VolumeCare will also allow you to adjust your voice volume (aka microphone) so others will hear you *loud* and clear.

VolumeCare also allows you to set pre-defined default volume listening levels for each speaker type on your Treo. So you can preset the listening level for your earpiece separately from the Speaker Phone.

New Features in version 5.xx:

# New call volume graphic display. The default display is replaced when VolumeCare is active. The new volume display meter new shows both the true volume level and the Boost level.

# New Automatic Mode. This allows for no tuning or configuration. Just load VolumeCare on your Treo and it does all the work.

# Advanced mode. Now allows volume rocker key toggling between volume and boost adjustment during a call.

# Online Documentation.

# Current version check. Will install updates via OTA (over the air) if a new version is available.

# Allows for the selection of applications that will have their volume controlled by VolumeCare. The selection of applications is made in the Global Options menu screen!

The Boomtube ("BT") is a 40 watt (20 watts RMS per channel) self-amplified three piece, aluminum body, cylindrical speaker system, with a big honkin' L-ion battery in it for portability.
